COCONUT WOOD
Sawmill
sawmill
Coconut wood is hardest on the outside of the trunk and at the bottom. It gets softer towards the centre and higher up.

Palms are felled with axes and then cut into logs by hand using two man pit saws.

From each trunk we cut a maximum of 3 x 7' logs from the bottom.

The logs are rotated in a break-down saw to remove the hardwood. The core timber is re-sawn from the centre of the log.

The wood is then stacked, air dried for two months and graded.

Keeping things simple is key to operations in the African bush; our policy is ‘low tech, labour intensive’.

Culling of old and unproductive coconut palms is a routine exercise within the Ng'ombeni plantation. The African Tall is a slow growing variety which produces an excellent grade of timber.
