All of our soaps are made with 100% virgin coconut oil, lye and pure clean Mafian water from our own well. Wherever possible we choose essential oils to fragrance them and natural plant and herbal extracts to give those delicate earthy hues. Nothing is tested on animals and all are suitable for vegans.
Lye is another name for sodium hydroxide. No lye, no soap. The lye is the catalyst that causes the oils to turn into soap (saponification). IT DOES NOT REMAIN IN THE FINISHED PRODUCT as it has undergone a chemical reaction with the oil to produce soap and glycerin.
ESSENTIAL OILS:
We use only pure essential oils to fragrance our soaps, with the exception of sandalwood where we use the fragrance oil alternative. Sadly, sandalwood has been unscrupulously over-harvested and in some areas is actually endangered. We also use peach fragrance oil as there doesn't seem to be an essential oil.
NATURAL INGREDIENTS:
Where possible in this tropical climate, we grow our own herbs, spices and plants or make use of what is available locally. Some of our botanicals will be seasonal features, such as the delicious orange, lime, tangerine and lemon zests, the nutty Indian almond and the pretty calendula petals
COSMETIC COLOURS:
The highest grade cosmetic colours are used to achieve special effects and richer colours.
PACKAGING:
Shrink wrap aside (and we have yet to discover a recycled shrink-wrap), the outer packaging for the soap uses eco-friendly materials: recycled paper labels, fronds of the wild date palm and stipule - the fibrous "cloth" which surrounds the heart of palm and periodically sheds itself.
CARE OF YOUR SOAP
Because we choose not to add any unneccessary chemicals to our recipes and avoid using tallow, our handmade soap bars may not be as hard as some commercial varieties. However, treated with a little care, it will last a long time. Place it somewhere it can drain freely after use, preferably on a soap dish, and don't leave it standing in water.
